The Nina Saxena Excellence in Technology Award 2008, this year was presented to Dr. Subhash P. Andey, Dr. Prakesh S. Kalker Dr. Madan V. Nanoti, Scientists, Geo-Environment Management Division, NEERI, Nagpur. Commemorating the spirit of its illustrous Alumna Dr. Nina Saxena, the award encourages and promtes technical innovation with a social development focus in India.
Speaking on the Occasion, Dr. Amit Patra, Dean, Alumni Affairs IIT Kharagpur expressed " Dr. Nina Saxena was a brilliant alumna of the Institute who along with a succesful career had the vision of alleviating poverty and boosting overall economic growth in India". The Award has aptly kept her vision and philosophy of life intact by aptly recognizing the innovation of the scientists of the Geo-Environment Management Division, NEERI.
NEERI-ZAR is a water purification system suitable for portable water supply particularly under emergency situations with wide-range of flood water quality. NEERI-ZAR produces filtered water with a turbidity in the range of 1.1 to 3.8 NTU and 90-99% reduction in bacterial load from water with a turbidity of 10-300 NTU and total Coli form and E.Coli count in the range of 6800-78300 CFU/100ml and 100-7900 CFU/100 ml respectively. A patent has been filed titled Portable Instant Water Filter Filing Date: Jan 29, 07: Ref No. 0268NF2006/IN. Public dedication function for Lokarpan of NEERI-ZAR was conducted in Baitu Block of Barmer district on17th sept, 2006. State Minister, Urban Development and Hosuing, Government of Rajsthan and local MLAs expressed their gratitude in timely help of NEERI-ZAR for the supply of potable water at the time when all their water sources were either contaminated or destroyed.
Presenting the Award to the winners, Chief Guest Prof. Lord Sushantha Kumar Bhattacharyya expressed " The Award-winning NEERI-ZAR water purification system not only reduces the expenditure on providing safe drinking water during emergency situation but also reduces the expenditure on water borne diseases due to drinking of water from contaminated sources. By reducing the epidemic, morbidity and mortality rate the NEERI-ZAR leads to improved quality of life.
